AMAZING DEAD Source Engine Mods
Thanks to everyone who comments and leaves feedback, much appreciated!
Had a lot of fun making this one.
Edit: A little clarification I didn't make in the video is what makes a mod or game dead. I believe that when a game struggles to fill even one or two servers, it's already on life support and is reaching end of life, meaning a dead game. Mods like Synergy do still have servers and players, but not enough to fill (the times that I've played in recent years) even a single server. So is a mod like Synergy dead? I guess it's up to you to decide! For me though, similar mods with so few players are long past its glory days and are more or less dead, though lesser so than things like Zombie ...

    The Steam release of Kreedz Climbing was a fun little game for a while, about seven years ago when it came out. I think it kind of fizzled out after a little while though, unfortunately. Ironically, I was and still am terrible at actual kz maps (the gamemode that the mod is based on and named after), so I just liked playing it for the surf maps.

    Alien Swam was incredibly popular and highly played when it first came out, but as it didn't get all that many updates or new content after its release it certainly did just die out. But it was well liked, there was nothing unpopular about it back then.

    Valve should somehow reward players for playing such dead games. Like giving them discounts on their wishlisted games or a chance for winning the steam gift card, It would definitely bring more players to them.

    • @Engeri
      @Engeri Месяц назад

      That would be an interesting way to keep a game alive! Unfortunately Valve is too preoccupied making bucket loads of money off Steam to care about the source engine. In reality, Valve at some point transitioned from being a game development company to being a digital infrastructure company with games as a side gig.

    alien swarm reactive drop is worth playing solo. you can change between characters using the F1-F4 keys, and the bots are programed to actually support you. I cannot stress enough how much of a gem reactive drop is. I want to see Valve revisit the Alien Swarm IP more than Half-Life, Team Fortress, and even Left 4 Dead. These were thoroughly explored to their peak, while Alien Swarm only scratched the surface and clearly wasn't finished it's Portal 2's fault why Alien Swarm ended up with one campaign and its source code public. I don't hate Portal 2, but I wont get much out of replaying it today. I would've preferred the alternate universe where Alien Swarm was a full game and Portal 2 was a side project I don't think alien swarm has been covered on RUclips in a way that I think does it justice, and if they did, few have seen it. There's a lot you can unpack in that source code. Like stuff that was cut, changed, or experimented with. Procedural levels are one example. Great video btw

    • @Engeri
      @Engeri Месяц назад

      Thanks very much! I should have gone a bit deeper and talked about Alien Swarm Reactive drop on top of the normal game, thats for sure. Either way it's a very forgotten part of Valve's game library and one that deserves more attention. I wish I could do a full video only on Alien Swarm, but code analysis was never my strong side even though I am a Software Engineer. Would be interesting to try though..

    • @Engeri
      @Engeri Месяц назад

      Huh, yeah I didn't actually know that. In my mind HL2 came first, then CS:S. Could be because I played HL2 first way back then. Either way they got released like a few weeks apart and I feel like the throne of the Source Engine still belongs to HL2 even though it technically was CSS, because CSS doesn't really show off a lot of what the source engine can do. HL2 however really does.

    • @lukabrasi001
      @lukabrasi001 Месяц назад

      @@Engeri obviously. but you can't really say "i will overlook this fact because in my mind..... " so yea, just thought i'd let you know. even then, technically the first ever source game released was a mod for the leaked version of HL2 in 2003

    • @Engeri
      @Engeri Месяц назад

      I'm not overlooking it, I'm dismissing it entirely based on the fact that Half Life 2 was the game that made the source engine into what it is (or was). CS:S did nothing of the sort. In fact, in the eyes of many in the CS community CS:S is not held in high regard. I personally enjoyed it lots, but I wasn't exactly in the CS community either. Yes, it is a FACT that CS:S was released two weeks prior to HL2. But it is also a fact that HL2 is the game that pushed the source engine and its content to the popularity that it got. I think we're arguing different things here, I'm not disputing the fact you're pointing out. I'm simply telling the story of what made the source engine big to begin with, and whatever game came two weeks before the other is entirely irrelevant to the point im making in the video :p But you're not wrong, and I appreciate you letting me know.

    synergy is relatively alive - you can play entire half life series on source engine IN GARRY'S MOD now so it's no longer meaningful BUT there are people who don't want to get gmod jsut to play half life in co-op obsidian conflict - never heard of it but from what you said it's just sven co-op on source source forts basically died when it's models were ported to gmod and quickly among source forts colored models tf2 and tfc models started taking part in caputre the flag mode zombie master source - replaced with thousand zombie servers in gmod and that's a shame because zombie master was great alien sawrm - source 2 tryout, it was fun but lack of other content was it's downfall, i mean how many times acan you run the same one campaign lambda wars - this one doesn't really feel dead because it never really felt alive, someone made company of heroes from half-life 2 but... no proper campaign

    • @Engeri
      @Engeri Месяц назад

      Garry's mod feels so goofy compared to Synergy but definitely yes it's doable in Gmod. I'd pick Synergy over Garrysmod to play a Half Life game though. Obsidian Conflict offers a lot more than just Sven Co-op, its custom maps, and gameplay that isn't generic to Valve and Half Life. There's like I show cased in the video so many cool unique experiences in that. ZM was truly great, along with Zombie Panic or even Contagion, all of which are more or less dead by this point. Edit: Either way, once a game reaches the point to where it has maybe one server with players, I think it can be argued that its dead or on critical life support.

    I think part of the reason why Alien Swarm is dead these days is because "Alien Swarm: Reactive Drop" exists, which is Alien Swarm plus TONS of additional content, and listed as its own game on Steam. So only two kinds of players are still playing Alien Swarm: Those unaware that Reactive Drop exists, and those that want to play addon content for Alien Swarm that does not work in Reactive Drop.

It's heartbreaking to see the toll time has taken on them, and the engine as a whole. I don't think anything will ever hold a torch to what Source was for so many people.

      Zombie Panic: Source is still alive and kicking! It doesn't have that massively active playerbase as it used to but it still has at least three servers that are full of people playing church, lake and objective maps. It also still gets content and engine updates from the team, so there's absolutely nothing stopping you to go back to it and enjoy it like the good old times. As for Obsidian Conflict I wouldn't say that it's dead and more like on hiatus as I have an insider on their dev discord and I know they're taking their time to prep for steam release and massive 1.5 update spanning a ton of map, gameplay fixes and new custom content. So I'd still cling to hope for OC as there's a big chance it will make a great comeback.

      ZPS has players, but I wouldn't call it alive either. It's right before it dips beneath what can be called an acceptable player count. When I was playing it as an intro for this game, there was only a single server with some players on, and they were playing a third party map similar to that found in CS:S's toony style. But yeah, it's not entirely dead which is why it only got an honorable mention. Once something reaches a player count where there is only a single server on lifesupport, I'd be willing to call it dead. As for Obsidian Conflict, I'd call it completely dead. I'll be the first to say that a content release now, so many years after the game dropped out of relevancy is going to do a whole lot of nothing. The players that still remember it, and have time to play might pop on for a week or two, before the game once again slips into obscurity. The best we can hope for OC is that it is able to draw in some new players once its on Steam, but with how poorly other source mods have been doing lately, I kinda doubt that it will be possible unfortunately. Either way you've got good points and I don't disagree with you at all!

      @@Engeri For me a multiplayer Source mod isn't considered dead as long as there's a large enough number of players to be able to enjoy all of the gameplay features of the mod. That number could be merely 16 or even just 6 players, but 6 players is still enough to have full-fledged round of ZPS. It could be just me clinging with all my strength to all of my powerful memories of ZPS back in 2010 and not being able to let go, but as long as the mod is still up and running with at least one server then I will always be that one of the 6 players still playing. Same goes for OC. Back in the day I only had Orange Box and Modern Warfare 2 as my only games on Steam so HL2 mods were my main source of entertainment and meeting new people. I know that I have at least a couple of friends whom I still have contact with and if I told them that OC got a new update they'd all go "OH SHIT LETS GOOO". Even if it were to last just for one day I know that a lot of people would give anything just to relive that late 2000's multiplayer Source experience. Very very sad for Zombie Master though. That game is indeed dead and it was also one of my go to mods of that time. You just can't forget the memes and references from zm_random and those various deathrun maps.

      Thats a fair argument! My response would simply be that I wasn't able to enjoy ZPS anymore :( because the one server that had players this week was playing a single map on repeat (some toony colorful map, cant remember the name) so its dead in my eyes, nor is 6 players enough to be able to have a good experience for me. OC didn't have a single player on any servers last week and its not fun alone ;_ ; if I need to recruit people into a game to play it... it's a gone for me. But I'm super glad that you are still able to play and experience these games still, thats awesome :D

    Far Cry 1 was damn near a decade ahead of HL2 with lighting and materials, but HL2 had better application of older tech to achieve a more realistic/grounded visual identity.

      Hmm. I'll be honest and say I don't see how that could be. The models, textures and lighting in Far Cry 1 looks awful. Especially in thein door areas. Besides, if Far Cry 1 was 'a decade ahead' I find it odd that it didn't set the standard for.. anything. Half Life, with its physics became the new standard for games in the decades after its release and remains so to this day.

    Yup, Listing a game on Steam is 100$ which is refunded once you sell the game and pass a threshold, (I don't remember the exact number, something like 1000$ or so) And yeah, selling a game using Source Engine will cost your a few tens of thousands of dollars but that's because Source uses Havok physics engine and a bunch of other things which requires you to own a license to use commercially. I believe this is one of the reason Source 2 took so long to develop as they built everything inhouse. Physics, sounds, lighting, etc.... If my memory is correct, Source 2 should be freely available for everyone at some point, including commercial uses.

    • @Engeri
      @Engeri Месяц назад

      Oh, you actually get the money back once you sell enough of a game on Steam? Interesting way to do things but it makes sense so that games aren't just spammed on the Steam Store. I kinda figured Valve just wanted a chunk of money for using Source Engine, if there are commercial licenses involved then the $25k price is more understandable I guess, but I doubt any business would pay $25k to use an 'antique' engine at this point. I do wonder what will become of Source 2 though, because it really isn't that widely adopted outside of a few games. In fact, I think FacePunch's Studios new game "sandbox" will be one of the first third party games on Source 2.

    • @Danger_N00dle
      @Danger_N00dle Месяц назад

      @@Engeri Now, source Engine is quite outdated, but I recall Valve has ways to go around it For instance, if my memory is good, you can pay half of it up front and pay the other half through the revenue generated by your game. While 25k is still a lot, it might be significantly less than what someone might be required to pay through Royalties to companies like Unity or Unreal. I'd love to know more about Source 2. I'm not sure why they haven't released the entire SDK yet. I remember them talking about making it available for free back around the time HL:A was released But uhhh... Valve Time I guess.

    • @Engeri
      @Engeri Месяц назад

      Yeah same here, I wonder if Source 2 will ever have mods and stuff made for it, or even see broader adoption as an actual game engine to run third party games.
